Can ChatGPT listen to audio files? Here’s what works
ChatGPT supports audio uploads on paid plans. Check formats, file limits, availability, and how uploads differ from Voice, Dictation, and the API.

Yes—ChatGPT can transcribe, summarize, and answer questions about uploaded audio files on paid subscriptions and workspaces. Audio uploads are not currently available on the Free plan. Access can also depend on your selected model, region, client version, and workspace settings, according to OpenAI’s audio-upload documentation.
This is a file-upload workflow, not just a microphone feature. OpenAI announced it in its October 6, 2026 release notes, so older advice saying ChatGPT cannot accept recordings may no longer apply.
How to use an existing recording
- Check your account. Confirm you are signed into the paid subscription or workspace you intend to use.
- Attach the audio file to a conversation using the chat’s file-attachment control.
- Ask for a specific output: a transcript, meeting recap, lecture notes, or answers about what was said.
- Review the result against the recording before relying on quotations, names, dates, numbers, or speaker labels.
These are documented uses of audio uploads. A useful starting prompt is:
Transcribe this recording. Mark unclear passages rather than guessing. Then summarize the decisions, open questions, and action items. Do not invent an owner or deadline when none is stated.
That prompt requests cautious handling; it does not guarantee an error-free transcript. Keep the original recording for verification.
Supported formats and size
OpenAI currently lists WAV, MP3/MPEG, OGG/OGA, audio-only WebM, PCM, FLAC, AAC, M4A, and audio-only MP4 as supported ChatGPT audio-upload formats.
The ChatGPT audio-file limit is 512 MB. The file must contain a valid, decodable audio stream. WebM and MP4 files identified as video are not supported by this audio-upload route. Longer recordings may be processed in sections when Data Analysis is available, but processing is best-effort and very long recordings may time out. These limits come from the ChatGPT upload guide, not the API documentation.
Audio uploads are different from Voice and Dictation
Choose the workflow that matches your input:
| What you want to do | Relevant workflow |
|---|---|
| Work with an MP3, M4A, WAV, or other saved recording | Attach a supported audio file to a ChatGPT conversation. |
| Speak with ChatGPT and hear it reply | ChatGPT Voice uses your microphone for a conversation. |
| Turn a spoken message into editable text before sending | Dictation records through the microphone icon and returns text you can edit. |
| Capture and summarize a meeting or voice note | ChatGPT Record is a separate recording feature documented for eligible macOS desktop users. |
| Transcribe files in an application or automated workflow | Use the OpenAI transcription API, which has separate requirements. |
The file-transcription API currently accepts files up to 25 MB, with MP3, MP4, MPEG, MPGA, M4A, WAV, and WebM inputs. Do not apply that API limit to ChatGPT’s audio-upload feature—or assume the ChatGPT format list applies to the API.
If you use ChatGPT Free, a practical alternative is to obtain a transcript elsewhere, then paste it or attach it as a supported text document. ChatGPT would be working from that text, not listening to the original audio.
If the upload fails—or the answer looks wrong
Check availability first: account and plan, selected model, region, app version, and workspace restrictions. A paid plan alone does not establish that the feature is available in every configuration.
Then check the file: supported format, decodable audio, size, and whether an MP4 or WebM is being identified as video. For an “upload limit reached” error, follow any retry time shown; failed attempts can sometimes count toward the upload-rate limit. Check OpenAI Status for upload incidents. Persistent failures can be escalated to OpenAI Support with your account email, a screenshot, timestamp and time zone, platform or browser, and request ID if available. See OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance.
Stop treating the result as authoritative if you cannot verify important passages. OpenAI warns that transcripts can contain errors, speaker identification may be unreliable, and performance varies across languages. A fluent summary is not proof that every part of the recording was understood correctly.
Before sharing a sensitive recording
Confirm you have permission to share it and follow any organizational restrictions. Review Settings → Data controls before uploading confidential material. OpenAI says managed Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspace content is excluded from training by default; personal-account controls differ. Turning off model training does not delete saved chats. See the current data-controls guidance.
